Stories from Behind the Lens: Photographing the Person Who Helped Me Find My Own Creative Path
Every now and then, a person comes into your life who quietly changes its direction.
Sometimes they don’t even realize they’ve done it.
This story is about one of those people.
Long before I photographed her as a client, she was my daughter-in-law - an extraordinarily talented artist, surface designer, teacher, and author. More importantly, she was one of the first people to look beyond my doubts and gently encourage me to pursue photography more seriously.
Years ago, when I questioned whether I belonged on a photography workshop in Ireland, she looked at me with kindness and confidence and simply said, “You cannot afford not to go.”
Her encouragement and belief in me have stayed with me ever since.
So when the opportunity came to photograph her for her magazine feature and growing creative business, the session carried a meaning that extended far beyond making beautiful photographs.
It felt a little like life coming full circle.
Her work is instantly recognizable.
Joyful lettering.
Thoughtfully designed products.
Beautiful fabrics.
Calendars, stationery, mugs, and creative tools that reflect both remarkable artistic talent and genuine warmth. Her work has earned national recognition, including being featured in What Women Create magazine, but anyone who knows her understands that her success is built on much more than artistic ability.
She is generous with her knowledge.
She encourages other artists.
She quietly makes the people around her believe they can accomplish more than they imagined.
Perhaps that is why photographing her felt so natural.
Our goal was to create a collection of images that documented not only her finished work, but also the creative process behind it. We wanted readers and future clients to see the artist at work - the sketches, the lettering, the carefully arranged products, and the thoughtful details that often go unnoticed but are part of every creative journey.
Her studio isn’t large.
Natural light was limited, and the warm tones of the room created challenges in accurately photographing the vibrant colors of her artwork. As photographers, we often solve those problems quietly, adjusting light, changing angles, and making countless small decisions that most people never see.
Those technical challenges are simply part of the process.
What stood out to me far more was her preparation.
Every workspace had been thoughtfully arranged.
Every collection of products reflected another chapter of her creative story.
Even her wardrobe had been carefully chosen to compliment the colors and personality of her brand.
Watching someone prepare so intentionally reminded me that beautiful photographs rarely happen by accident.
They grow out of care.
Out of planning.
Out of years spent refining a craft.
As the session unfolded, we moved from one creative space to another, photographing everything from her artistic process to the finished products that now reach customers across the country. During editing, I spent extra time refining color, balancing light, and ensuring that every image faithfully represented both her artwork and the welcoming atmosphere she has created around her business.
When the final gallery was complete, she told me she wanted me to photograph her brand going forward.
Naturally, that meant a great deal to me. Not simply because she loved the photographs.
But because of who she is.
Looking back I realize this session wasn’t only about documenting a successful artist. It reminded me how profoundly one person’s encouragement can shape another person’s future.
Had she not gently challenged my fears all those years ago, I honestly don’t know whether I would have continued pursuing photography.
That thought humbles me.
We often underestimate the impact of a few encouraging words.
Sometimes they become the beginning of someone else’s story.
This session reminded me of something I hope I never forget.
Whether we are artists, teachers, photographers, or entrepreneurs, we have opportunities every day to encourage another person to take the next step toward the life they are meant to live.
I know that because someone once did exactly that for me.
