More Than One Calling: Brand Photography for a Designer and Life Coach in the Triangle, NC
I have always believed that creative people are rarely just one thing.
They are artists who also teach.
Designers who encourage.
Makers who mentor.
Perhaps that is why I enjoy brand photography so much. Every session reminds me that behind every business is a person with a story that is often much richer than a simple job title.
This particular client is a perfect example.
She is an accomplished fabric and wallpaper designer whose beautiful work reflects her artistic vision, but she is also a life coach and mentor who helps other designers and entrepreneurs build meaningful creative businesses. Those two passions aren’t separate at all - they naturally compliment one another.
Our goal wasn’t simply to creat professional portraits.
It was to capture both sides of who she is.
The artist.
And the guide.
As with many sessions, the location presented a few challenges. The interior spaces were darker than expected, with deep shadows and bright sunlight streaming through vertical blinds. Outside the setting were simple - a brick wall, trees, and a quiet sitting area. Beautiful in person, perhaps, but not immediately inspiring through the lens of a camera
One of the things photography has taught me is that interesting photographs don’t always require extraordinary locations.
Sometimes they simply require learning to see ordinary places differently.
A slight change in perspective.
A different angle.
A shift in the light.
Little by little, those ordinary spaces began telling a much more interesting story.
There was another element that made this session especially meaningful.
The client shared that she had never been completely happy with her previous brand photographs. They felt dark to her, both in lighting and in the way they represented her. As we talked through her vision, it became clear that she wanted something brighter and more welcoming while still preserving some of the richness and depth she appreciated in her earlier images.
At first, those requests seemed to pull in opposite directions.
Brighter.
Yet still rich.
Lighter.
Yet still grounded.
Photography often asks us to balance things that appear contradictory, and perhaps life does the same.
Over several days of editing, I carefully refined each image, adjusting light, color, and contrast one photograph at a time. The goal wasn’t simply technical accuracy, it was creating photographs that felt like her - warm, approachable, creative, and confident.
When she asked for one final adjustment to make her skin appear even more luminuous while retaining the richness of the overall image, I created an additional custom edit that honored both requests.
Moments like these remind me that collaboration doesn’t end when the camera is put away.
Sometimes the most important conversations happen afterward.
Looking back, this session reinforced something I’ve been learning over and over again.
Brand photography is about much more than beautiful images.
It is about listening.
It is about understanding how someone wants to be seen.
For creative entrepreneurs especially, our businesses are deeply personal. We pour our hearts into our work, and naturally we hope our photographs communicate not only what we do, but who we are.
That is the privilege of being a brand photographer.
I don’t simply photograph designers, artists, and entrepreneurs.
I have the opportunity to help tell the story of people who have found the courage to pursue work that reflects who they truly are.
Every session teaches me something new.
This one reminded me that the most successful photographs are rarely about perfect lighting or ideal locations.
They happen when trust, creativity, and collaboration come together to tell an honest story.
